Q&A with Meital Dohan
You act, sing, and dance - you're a triple threat... but if you could only choose one, which would it be and why?
I would say sorry, I'm not the kind of girl to choose only one. I see all the different platforms like music, acting, and writing as outlets to express what's on my mind and in my heart. I've always been a performer so I go with the flow.
You're an award-winning actress, receiving two Israeli Oscar nominations and an Israeli Tony Award. How did you feel when you were presented these honors?
It always feels amazing when you are recognized for your work. I think in these moments I've just felt utter gratitude, emanating from within and extending outward to all the people that have supported and continue to support me.
Some in Israel have deemed you the next Madonna. How do you feel about that comparison?
I think you should ask Madonna how she feels about it! It's totally fine by me to be compared to one of the world's greatest living artists. I can think of way worse things.
US audiences know you best as 'Yael Hoffman,' the Admissions Director of Ha Midrash L'Torah from Showtime's Weeds. What was your experience on the show?
Working on Weeds was a total blast and whenever I think about that time I'm just all smiles. Also, I got to wear a strap-on and be a badass dominatrix Rabbai so nothing can really beat that in the fun category!
In what ways did you draw from your Israeli heritage for your role as 'Yael'?
Well I was never a dominatrix Rabbai so I don't think I had to tap too much into my heritage for the part actually! I did grow up in a small village, and I, to this day have a very close relationship with my Rabbai, but I think 'Yael' and my Rabbai are quite different!
Your singles have taken the world by storm and landed on some top pop music charts around the globe. What's it like to receive international attention for your debut album, I'm In Hate With Love?
It's great to have a global audience because I travel so much and it's nice to know I have supporters in each city I visit, especially in one where I might not speak the language. They say music is the universal language, so its especially cool to get that co-sign by you know... the universe.
Tell us about your European tour. What was your favorite part?
My favorite part of my recent Euro tour was when I had the pleasure of working with Pro7 TV in Germany and I think we came up with a lot of funny episodes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TPnfLxstJs0.
DJs worldwide have remixed your hit singles, "On Ya" featuring Sean Kingston and "Give Us Back Love." What's it like to walk into a room and hear a remixed version of your song?
I believe in the power of art and the power of music. I believe that art can make all the difference, so it makes me happy to share my creation with others.
What was it like to record and film the music video with Sean Kingston?
It was wonderful working with Sean, he emanates positivity and good energy all from the get-go. We also had great chemistry and music collaborators that made the single such a success.
In your music videos--which have over 10 million views--you skydive, streak, and so much more. Where do you come up with these extravagant ideas for your videos?
I dream them. My dreams are like epic novels or films and usually filled with kind of absurd, really epic imagery and adventures. I think about the meaning of the song even though it sounds silly, usually they'll have some meaning and message and that's what I making sure the video portrays. Since as we know reality can be really challenging, so too the videos tend to be challenging. Where does your belief and interest in miracles stem from?
I've always been a very spiritual person and I think to believe in life is to believe in miracles. If your eyes are open there are miracles happening everyday and I grew up always knowing that and tapping into that miraculous energy around me. I also created a radio show called Loud Miracle and it was all about people who created miracles in there peoples' lives and the universe.
You were recently featured in RUNWAY magazine. What was the photo shoot and interview like?
I've to be primped and pampered in a proper fashion, so I always love an editorial shoot. The photo shoot was so much fun! When I'm being interviewed I try not to think so hard about it, because the less I think, the more authentic I'm being. Kind of like now.
Telling by your wardrobe, you have a strong sense of self. How would you describe your style?
My style is very bold, eclectic and provocative. I love costume, and the game of dress up. I love how an outfit can really be an expression of my mood that day. I always think of my body like a blank canvas, and I get to paint different colors, prints, and patterns on it to express myself through clothes and wardrobe.
Who are your role models in the fashion, music, and acting industries?
In general, I admire people who make a social change and use the art to improve this world and make it a better place. From the fashion world, I'd say Coco Chanel whose story redefined women in the 20th century. Andy Warhol, the Beatles, and Bon Iver are all inspirations to me.
Gossip alert! Who is your current celebrity crush?
I don't kiss and tell!
What goals do you have for your career in the future?
I think as I begin to amass an even greater reach and extend my audience I want to continue to use my platform as an artist for social good. I think you're given a very special gift to be able to communicate with so many people when you perform, so I want to continue pushing myself to be involved in philanthropy and greater social causes because that's definitely something I connect to very deeply. What's your game plan right now? What are you going to work on next?
I try to never have a master plan because you have to really take each day as it comes, and there's always so much going on! Right now I have a TV series in development, a film in development and I'm finishing my album! So there's a lot going on and summer is passing me by like wildfire.

Meital Dohan: Labors Of Love 
Please tell me your whole inception into entertainment – When did you first become interested in it? And, how did it all begin for you, Meital?
It feels like I've been entertaining since I exited the womb, but it really began when I started studying acting as a teenager. So, I started on the stage, which still feels like home, and then I made my way to TV & film sets.
Where exactly do you hail from? And, with that being said, growing up who all did/do you consider to be your strongest influences?
I come from a small village in Israel outside Ra'anana. Growing up, I was always a huge fan of major artists like Andy Warhol, (Jean-Luc) Godard...People that lived outside the boundaries of normal society. At present, I still admire those people, and I'm drawn to people who really take risks and really fight for the art that they believe in.
At what particular point in time actually did you opt to pursue entertainment on a professional level?
I don't think it was ever a conscious choice in the way that I said, "Oh, I think I'd like to be famous now!" I started performing and the audience wanted more from me, so I kept doing that. From there, I was nominated for the Israeli Academy Award and came to the U.S. where I did Weeds, Monogamy, Woke Up Dead and it just kept going and going. I think you realize the need to do something professionally is when the thought of doing anything else just doesn't even enter the equation.
As you just mentioned, your break-out role came courtesy of the popular Showtime series Weeds, correct? So please tell me how the role of ‘Yael Hoffman’ actually came about?
My agent sent me to meet with the casting director and then I was on a plane, and then I was on set, and then I had a dildo, which is of course my famous scene where I put the moves on Justin Kirk's character ['Andy Botwin']!
Since you are both a budding actress and international singing sensation, do you have a specific personal preference when it comes to the two of these innate talents?
It's funny because that's the question I'm asked most, and the question I never have an exact answer for! I find that singing and acting are like my two babies...I love them both but differently. Sometimes, I wake up and I just want to be in the studio writing songs and making music. Other days, I want to be on a film set. When you're acting, you're trying to lose yourself inside the character you are playing. When you're singing, you get to play the amplified version of you. So, it's interesting how that dichotomy plays to the self; one is denying the self, and one is indulging in it. I think I really need both, which is why I use both to my artistic advantage!
Your last single entry “Give Us Back Love,” has become quite a huge hit for you -- So, how exactly does that make you feel?
I feel really lucky that it found its audience, and it was such a labor of love creating that song. It's really incredible when you work so hard at something, and then the end result is a great reception from your fans. It's definitely more than the icing on the cake because it actually drives me to wake up every day and do what I do.
As an extension to that last question, how then do you actually classify your overall sound and/or style?
I don't like to box myself in by genre, but I definitely have created my own hybrid pop, fusing elements of Hip-Hop, dance and electro-pop, into something that sounds uniquely my own.
What do you feel it is exactly that will continue to sustain you in this grueling business of entertainment?
Maybe it’s my secret snake diet, or maybe it’s my ability to see the future? Seriously though, I try to give the audience something that comes from a need to express myself, while looking at the work that needs to be done socially, instead of thinking what would entertain them in a casual way because I do feel you have to push things to an extreme to help make a point, or spread a message.
Do you have any other outside/additional future aspirations, maybe even completely away from entertainment?
Of course! I'm very active with philanthropy, and want to continue dedicating more of my time to helping the world be a less corrupt, heartless place. Right now, I support ‘Friends of Sheba,’ an organization that provides the best medical care to anyone in the middle east, no matter their race or color. This is really important to me because I value human life and think we all need to band together to bring equal and fair medical care to everyone.
To date, what has been your biggest career moment, at least thus far anyway?
It's so hard to chose, but I think it felt really great to be Top 10 on the Billboard charts. As a newcomer to the music scene, who put out only three songs in her life, it felt like I was being embraced by a new community and that's an exceptional feeling. Winning the Tony Award in Israel wasn't so bad either!
Looking ahead, say five or ten years from now, where do you see yourself?
I'll be building a villa on the moon facing the sun. *She announces with a big grin*
As for the immediate, what’s next for you?
I'm finishing my album and recording new music, which is really creatively fulfilling. I'm also working on a TV series that I'm really excited about and is in development.
